The Story Beneath The Story
I want to talk to you about "The Adamant Door" by Henry Beston, found in the Starlight Wonder Book. This story, available on Project Gutenberg, follows a boy named Hugh whose initial encounter with a marching regiment sparks a profound curiosity. Ultimately, I wonder, what drives people so deeply to join a cause, and why does the compelling concept of belonging feel so fundamentally crucial to our survival?
We first journey through the narrative of Hugh the soldier, watching him confront abandoning his friends and facing monumental temptation. We then reflect on why seemingly isolated people are driven to face terrifying unknowns just to get back to their comrades. By exploring these moments of deep struggle, we arrive at the crucial concept of belonging, the motivation that connects us all.
